Upon your arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you'll be greeted by our friendly local staff. They'll assist you with your luggage and transport you to your homestay/Volunteer House accommodatio. After settling in, you'll have a brief orientation session to familiarize yourself with the immediate surroundings and local customs. The rest of the day will be yours to relax, unpack, and recover from jet lag. In the evening, you'll join fellow volunteers for a welcome dinner, where you'll have the opportunity to meet your peers and discuss the exciting journey ahead. This will be a perfect time to ask any initial questions and start building connections with your fellow volunteers.
These two days will be dedicated to an immersive orientation program. You'll start with an in-depth introduction to Kenya's rich heritage, exploring its history from pre-colonial times to the present day. Expert local guides will lead engaging sessions on Kenyan culture, covering topics such as traditional customs, social norms, and etiquette. You'll learn about the diverse ethnic groups in Kenya and their unique traditions. The orientation will also focus on practical aspects of your stay, including how to interact respectfully with Kenyans, important safety and security measures, and the responsibilities you'll have in your volunteer program. Interactive workshops and role-playing exercises will help you prepare for potential cultural challenges. By the end of day 3, you'll feel well-equipped to navigate Kenyan society and ready to begin your vet volunteer work.
For the next eleven days, you'll be fully immersed in your role as a volunteer veterinarian. Your work will primarily focus on pets and domestic animals, including dairy cattle. Each day will begin early, typically around 7 AM, with a briefing at the local veterinary clinic or farm. You'll work alongside experienced local vets, assisting in various tasks such as health check-ups, vaccinations, and minor surgeries for pets. In the dairy sector, you'll be involved in herd health management, milk quality control, and educating local farmers on best practices. Expect to encounter a wide range of cases, from routine check-ups to more challenging medical situations. This hands-on experience will not only allow you to apply your veterinary skills but also to learn about tropical veterinary medicine and the unique challenges faced in a developing country context. Your evenings will be free for reflection, cultural activities, or socializing with fellow volunteers and locals.
On your final day, the morning will be dedicated to wrapping up your volunteer work and saying goodbye to the local staff and animals you've been caring for. You'll participate in a closing ceremony where you'll receive a certificate of completion, recognizing your valuable contribution to the community. This will be followed by a farewell lunch with your fellow volunteers and local team members, providing an opportunity to reflect on your experiences and exchange contact information. In the afternoon, you'll have some free time for last-minute souvenir shopping or sightseeing in Nairobi. Finally, our staff will ensure you're transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in plenty of time for your departure flight, marking the end of your rewarding volunteer experience in Kenya.
