Welcome to an enriching two-week teaching volunteer experience in Likoni, Mombasa! This program offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of coastal Kenya while making a meaningful impact on young lives. As a volunteer, you’ll assist in local classrooms, focusing on English and Math education. You’ll work alongside dedicated local teachers, develop your teaching skills, and gain invaluable cross-cultural experience. Beyond the classroom, you’ll have the chance to explore the beautiful surroundings of Mombasa and engage in cultural exchange activities. This journey promises not only to benefit the students you’ll teach but also to foster your personal growth and create lasting memories.
Your adventure begins with your arrival in Mombasa, where you'll be warmly welcomed by our local team. As you're transferred to your accommodation in Likoni, you'll catch your first glimpses of the stunning Kenyan coastline. Settle into your new home and enjoy a welcome dinner, savoring your first taste of delicious Kenyan cuisine while getting to know your fellow volunteers.
Dive deep into Kenyan culture and your role as a volunteer teacher. The day starts with a comprehensive orientation session, covering everything from local customs to classroom management techniques. You'll tour Likoni, visiting key landmarks and your assigned school. The afternoon includes a hands-on teaching workshop, equipping you with practical skills for the Kenyan classroom. End the day with a traditional Swahili language lesson, preparing you for basic communication with your students.
These days form the core of your volunteer experience. Weekday mornings begin early with breakfast at your accommodation before heading to your assigned school. You'll spend 4-5 hours teaching, engaging with eager young minds in subjects like English, Math, or Science. Afternoons are dedicated to lesson planning, one-on-one tutoring, and participating in extracurricular activities like sports or arts clubs.
Weekends offer a chance to explore the breathtaking beauty of Likoni and its surroundings. Visit the historic Fort Jesus in Mombasa, relax on the pristine beaches of Diani, or take a wildlife safari in nearby Shimba Hills National Reserve. These excursions provide a perfect balance to your teaching duties, immersing you further in the rich tapestry of Kenyan coastal life.
Your final day of teaching is filled with emotion as you bid farewell to your students. The morning is spent wrapping up any ongoing projects and saying goodbye to your class. In the afternoon, participate in a reflective session with your fellow volunteers, sharing experiences and discussing the impact of your work. The day culminates in a joyous farewell party, complete with traditional Kenyan music and dance. Here, you'll receive a certificate recognizing your valuable contribution, a lasting memento of your time in Likoni.
As you prepare to leave, take a final stroll along the Likoni beach, reflecting on your journey. Our team will ensure you're transferred safely to Mombasa airport, departing with a heart full of memories, new friendships, and the satisfaction of having made a meaningful impact on the lives of Likoni's youth.
